What is Power BI Developer Mode and How Does It Help with Collaboration?

Source control, CI/CD, and collaboration with .pbip and Developer Mode.

Developer Mode in Power BI saves the semantic model as a .pbip (Power BI Project) folder with readable definitions (TMDL, etc.) instead of a single binary .pbix. That folder can be stored in Git and used in CI/CD.

Benefits

Teams can diff and merge changes, run automated checks, and deploy via pipelines. Developer Mode is required for deployment pipelines and for a proper “source of truth” in version control.

Turn on Developer Mode in Desktop options before saving. Use a .pbip when you want to collaborate on the model definition; keep .pbix for one-off or non-pipeline reports if that fits your process better.
