Migrating Queries from Power BI Desktop to Dataflows

Move M logic from Desktop to dataflows for reuse and governance.

Moving Power Query (M) from a .pbix into a dataflow centralizes logic, allows multiple reports to share the same source, and can improve refresh and governance. The migration is mostly copy-paste of queries and dependencies.

Process

Create a dataflow and add new entities that mirror your Desktop queries. Copy M code from Power Query Editor in Desktop into the dataflow entities, fixing data source references and credentials for the cloud. Point your semantic model to the dataflow instead of the original sources.

Test refresh and downstream reports. Use staging workspaces if needed so you can validate before switching production reports.
